II Project Parameters

 

Site: Kingston, Ontario

Location: 1143 King Street West

Objective: Design a three-story wellness centre that includes a spa, fitness, and medical facility.

Target Population: middle-aged + (35 years old +)

 

II Concept

 

The concept of this project focuses on implementing and embodying participatory design.

 

Participatory design focuses on encouraging socialization and building relationships through space and activity planning within the built environment. By providing people with options they are able to dictate where and how they choose to participate within the space. This concept seeks to engage a person’s cognitive abilities and decelerate the advancement of their brain and body’s decline in performance due to aging. Participatory design will keep the individual actively present and connected to their loved ones, community, and environment. The implementation of this design will valourize the individual.

 

Within the project, multiple "hub" or activity areas are included to allow the user to decide where and how they choose to participate.

 

II Completed as a group project, with my focus in the spa facility.
